Barbed wire, watchtowers, and escape attempts
The Gestapo and guards did everything they could to keep the prisoners inside. Nevertheless, desperate prisoners planned and carried out cunning escape attempts. Some ended well, while others had disastrous consequences. Outside the barbed wire lay the minefield, which made escape even more dangerous.

Preben's walk ended tragically
Preben Erling Andersen had just turned 22 when he was shot by a German guard. The Germans had just established a new security zone along the barbed wire fence, where all traffic was prohibited under threat of being shot. We do not know whether Preben had not heard the warning or did not take it seriously, but his walk ended in tragedy, illustrating the harsh reality of life in the camp. It was an incident that shocked and provoked the prisoners.

In memory of the border guards who never returned home
The Gendarme Wall is a memorial to the Danish border guards who never returned home. After the Danish police were interned in September 1944, 291 border guards were captured by the Germans and sent to the Frøslev camp. 141 were deported to the Neuengamme concentration camp, and 38 died in the camps. The memorial was inaugurated on May 5, 1946, and has stood here in the Frøslev camp since 1993. Every year on October 5, people gather for a memorial service for those who perished.
